Gathering and Pressing Flowers
Pressing flowers is relatively
easy and requires no special equipment.
An old telephone book is ideal. Once your
flowers have been packed, top it off with
a few heavy books.
It takes two to three weeks
for most flowers and foliage to fully dry.
Thin out the petals of thicker
flowers before pressing; otherwise, your
pressed flower might look more like a smashed
flower!
Some flowers will darken as they dry.
Store dried flowers in a dark, sealed container
until ready to use.
When gathering flowers and
foliage, keep in mind that thinner flowers
and foliage are best. They press better
and dry faster, which means they keep more
of their color. Look for flowers that will
still resemble an open flower when flattened,
and dont pass over tiny flowers.
Drying Flowers
The simplest way of drying flowers is to
hang them. Remove unwanted leaves, divide
the flowers into small bunches, and tie
them together with string, yarn, or rubber
bands. Hang the flowers upside down in a
warm, dry, dark place. It must be dry to
prevent the flowers from rotting, and it
should be as dark as possible to prevent
light from fading the flowers.
Drying time will vary depending on the
kind of flowers,, the humidity, and the
temperature. Check on your flowers every
2 - 3 days. You want them dry to the touch.
Whether you are drying or pressing your
flowers, it is best to pick or cut the flowers
on a dry day. Try to do it in the morning,
as soon as any dew has dried. Try to pick
your flowers just before they reach the
full bloom stage. Some flowers do open more
as they dry.
